Sunday Citar

Johannes Vermeer
"Woman with a Pearl Necklace"

“The greatest compliment that was ever paid me was when one asked me what I thought, and attended to my answer.”
Henry David Thoreau

"What we need is not the will to believe, but the wish to find out. "
William Wordsworth

"Light tomorrow with today!"
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

"Familiar acts are beautiful through love. "
Percy Bysshe Shelley

I think this young woman in the painting is having a moment of revelation. I love when a painting makes me think about the possible thoughts and emotions of the portrait subject. Vermeer could skillfully bring those quiet, solitary moments to life in his portraits.

I like the Thoreau quote. Torey Hayden in her book "Just Another Kid" has the main character, a special education teacher, say repeatedly through her book, "And I regarded her..."

True discourse includes large portions of listening with regard. Even Thoreau seems to acknowledge this in his quote.

Another blogger's poem alludes to the same attribute... (paraphrase),

"You take the time to check in on my dreams."

Happy Sunday!

Light tomorrow with today. That is too gorgeous for words. LOVE it!

Beautiful! I love the Thoreau quote best. Perhaps the girl in the painting is formulating a response, having been asked a question of substance. That would have been a revelation back in that day!

Have a great week!

I love the rebel poets, Wordsworth & Percy Shelley! I just finished reading Frankenstein, and it makes me want to get to know Shelley's works even further!

What a gorgeous painting. I love the color, the shadow, it's so effective. It's almost like the painting is asking us Thoreau's quote, what we think, and attending to our answer.

Great quotes! I especially like the one by Henry David Thoreau, but then, I love everything "Thoreau."

Vermeer's use of light is astounding. Love the painting! The thing that stood out to me most (call me weird) was the wall. He took such time to put detail into that wall---I can almost feel every bump, and experience the coolness, just by his use of shadow.

The quote by Shelley is my fave today. It's our seeming mundane tasks that come alive when performed with love.

I love your Sunday Citar posts. I always come here for a spot of inspiration.
