One of those girls

About 45 minutes ago, I was alone for the first time today. On this warm and muggy night in NY, I was pushing my creaky shopping cart to my lonely minivan. I had to get some food for my fridge. After a weekend of sun and fun, our household was in dire need of provisions.

As I pushed my cart, a car filled with laughing and chatting teen girls drove by. They were excitedly gesturing to a parked car with a few teen boys hanging out together for the night. I think some harmless, teasing exchange occurred as the girls drove off to another destination.

It has been twenty-five years since I was one of those laughing girls. Now that statement just freaked me out a bit! Where did all that time go?

I thought about all that carefree fun as I unloaded my groceries. Time has changed my body (that's for sure:), but I still feel like I could giggle with the best of them if invited to play along with the girls again!

No more time for fantasy talk. Laundry duty awaits.

Seriously - where does the time go?

But I love my life and I certainly don't want to go back.

Yep...I totally get that! And yes, so scary how long ago that was and how fast time went by....*sigh*

I know just what you mean. I still feel like a teenager inside, though my body tells me differently.

Oh, so very nice, Kelly. Thank you for that.

i remember the days of cheap gas (less than $.25/gal) and cruising up and down the main drag to do the same things with the girls also cruising.

Always made me wonder what kids today do for cheap summer entertainment - especially out here where there is no shopping mall.

Time does seem to pass quicker with age. I was talking to my little brother (who's a senior in high school this year) and telling him about my senior year.. then it hit me - I graduated over six years ago! That may not sound like much, but I freaked out for a minute! It doesn't seem like that long ago. Maybe a year or two, tops!

I don't think we ever really lose that young girl in us. Just takes the right circumstance to make us as silly as ever!

You can be silly again, Kelly. But would you honestly like to go back?

I remember talking to an 80 something lady at church many years ago who was fighting some health issues. She said, "It's funny Don, because I feel just like a school girl inside." Then she giggled. It seems part of us doesn't age at all.

I know how that is! I just ran into a lady I knew when I was in high school and she had her youngest daughter with her. I remembered that girl as a little thing with dark pigtails. This was a fully developed young woman standing before me with streaks of blond combed through her hair and mascara on her eyelashes. When I explained I was a senior when her older sister was about 12 years old (who is in her first year of college now), her eyes widened as if to say "yep, no wonder you feel old." Ha!

I think what people forget is that we really don't ever change who we are with age. We are still the same spirit inside- the body is just older. At times like this is when I start to contemplate the spiritual side of things. How amazing and wonderful it will be to be freed from the weight of our mortal bodies and all that is left is that spirit...who we are. With that perspective, death doesn't seem so bad at all to me.

Sometimes during lunch hour here at work, I find myself giggling at something superficial and totally immature and it's really fun. I used to work out during my lunches but now that I have Deaglan, I see lunch hour as social time with some of my coworkers. I think you need some social time too!

I never realize just how old I am until I figure out stuff like my 25th high school reunion is coming up or that I've been out of college for 20 years. That is a moment for sure!

I really like the new blog look!
I feel this way usually, too. Sometimes it's very surreal to think about how I've been there and done that ... and now it's so far away, I think, as the rest of my body follows my very pregnant belly while walking away with a smile reminiscing about those days. I totally relate. Beautiful recap of your emotions.

Yes, where has the time gone? Endless minutes turned to years but just because we have a few grays and creases doesn't mean we can't laugh, giggle and be that teen girl again. Even if it's just for a moment :) I can so picture you now with a daisy behind your ear dancing and laughing to a song only Kelly can hear. Nothing wrong with fantasy talk.

I have those moments as well. I miss those giggles. I had lunch recently with one of my old giggling buddies (Noah was with me). It was fun. We need to keep that giggle in our lives even with all of the laundry.

It really goes by quickly. I'm just now coming up on my 20th high school reunion in, oh, another year. But it still feels JUST like yesterday on many days. :)

Thanks for visiting my blog and for your kind comment.
I too feel like a girl on the inside, and look my outside and wonder where that girl went. Sigh.
Your post captured the feeling beautifully.
