Friday High Five

Here's my Friday High Five for Angela over at Angela's Adventures and Minor Mishaps. If you want to join in the fun, jump over to Angela's blog and add your own Friday High Five list. It can really be about anything that is on your mind.

HERE ARE FIVE ACTIVITIES FROM MY TEEN YEARS
THAT I WISH I COULD STILL DO

  1. Rollerskate. When I was a kid, we would skate all day on broken down sidewalks. Why do I think that I'll break a bone somewhere if I even tried to stand up on roller blades?

  2. Lunch table entertainer. When I was in high school, I liked being the stand up comedienne for my lunch table. Even though I was on the shy side in class, I worked hard to make the other girls laugh at even the stupidest observation or joke. I liked being "on stage" for my friends. Now I make my kids laugh. My young ones are an appreciative audience for my silliness. They haven't heckled me yet:)

  3. Doughnuts for breakfast. As a mom, I don't advocate this choice for breakfast, but as a teenager I liked sneaking a doughnut in the morning. Remember those days when we were all happily oblivious about calorie amounts and fat percentages in our food?

  4. Hanging out. My girlfriends and I would spend hours and hours just hanging out in front of the apartment building on my block. We didn't do much, but we had fun. I don't think we even said the word "bored". I think "bored" is sometimes my kids' favorite vocabulary word. Kids really want to be entertained all the time these days. When I was a kid, we didn't have such high expectations. We just went along and made the most of the day.

  5. Marathon reading. Those were the days when I could literally knock out one book after another. Of course, I had no real responsibilities when I was young. I could stay up all hours of the night to finish reading my latest book. Tonight, I'll probably fall asleep (glasses on) after one page. I even can tell that my eyes are getting heavy as I read. I try to fight it, but this tired mom has to give in. Now I sneak a paragraph or two of reading throughout the day. Sometimes I'll even try and read while sorting laundry or chopping veggies. I'm going to finish my book one way or another!
Happy Friday everyone!

Someday you'll be able to read again... it may be awhile in coming, but ... someday! And that table entertainer? I think you've still got it there. Your audience has just changed a little! :)

I can so relate I loved rollerskating. I think kids rely too much on electronics now a days I remember being radio DJ's and taping our selves trying to be funny. LOL

I've never been able to make the transition from roller skates to roller blading. Oh well. I'd love to hear some of your lunch time routine!

This was a great walk down memory lane, especially the marathon reading and the rollerskating. I am too scared to even go on a bike these days!

As for reading at night I am lucky to get 5 minutes of reading in before my eyes get heavy and my heads starts to nod!

I'll go for #1 and #5. I used to love to rollerskate - now I'd just break something. I still love marathon reading sessions, but the times are few and far between.

Oh I used to hang out with my girl friends at Dunkin Donuts! We would drink coffee, gossip about boys and eat donut after donut... What I would give to do that...

The roller skating thing is funny to me since my friends were taking their kids to skate night for the school and I was terrified. Feeling bad I asked Elijah if he wanted to go and realized just how much I loved him when he said, "NO I MIGHT FALL!" The mother in me wanted to make him at least try but figured me falling on top of him would probably hurt him even more!! I too was the lunch clown and miss it! I recently got in touch with some of my old lunch buddies on Facebook and we have a hoot remembering those dayS! AND who doesn't miss hanging out? Thanks I loved this post!!

1) Never rollerskated (no balance).

2) No lunch table (not popular enough), although my humor was borderline nasty with friends.

3) Doughnuts for breakfast....MMMMMMMM....(although cold pizza is good too).

4)Hanging out, did a lot of that as well (not too many friends then).

5) Marathong reading. Many was the day when I came home from the library with a half dozen books under my arms, whereas I promptly read them from cover to cover. No namby-pamby thin ones either. No sir, 400+ pagers.

Oh those old days of "hanging out." As Bruce Springsteen sings, "Glory Days!" Happy Friday to you.

Years ago when I was a girl we roller skated everywhere, not sure I could do it now though lol. I love reading but the only chance I seem to get know is on holiday.

Love Carol xx

i used to roller skate when i was a kid too. we would have these rollerskating races and i would win! every time! now...ummm not so much! I know what you mean about reading too! motherhood takes over your life! in a good way of course though! when the kids are older then you will have time for more reading right? that is what i keep telling myself!

I used to roller skate all over my block too. I'm talking roller skates with four wheels. Rollerblades are a whole other animal. I tried them once -- I stood up with help and that was about the end of that. I miss the marathon reading days too. In the winter months we sometimes declare a jammie day and everyone just lounges around all sloth like, reading or colouring. Reading for me - colouring for the little ones.

What a great topic! I miss hanging out too. And donuts for breakfast? ABSOLUTELY. We do it!! What's it going to hurt to have a donut a couple of times a year? Really?

Well, I can tell ya,, you get old, your kids get a life of their own, you have time (or should have), you think you got your ducks in a row, and then,,,you want to spend you extra time zooming between cities to see your kids and grand kids..and you don't have much time for anything else. It is great...

You're better than me! I let the whole house fall apart so I can sit on my butt on the couch and read a book! I neglect everything until the book is through. My husband has learned that if I get a good book then everything else gets put on the back burner for a while. I HAVE forced myself to put the book down now and then for important things.....like food...poopy diapers....screams of pain...and ....no, I think that's it. :)

Oh to be able to Roller Skate again, my niece tried to get me to do it last year and I was like not with my back problems.. I could just picture it going terribly wrong and me in the back of an ambulance ;) Great post

When I've been away for a little while and return, I remember how lovely it is here, how real your expressions are. Thank you, Kelly. It feels like home.

Oh, I LOVED skating! Can you buy roller skates still? And I used to marathon read too- one after another. I remember getting SO annoyed at my mom for making me stop reading to help set the table. THE NERVE! :)

What a fun list! I definitely second the roller skating. We would spend every weekend doing it when I was younger, I was even on a speed team at one point. I am absolutely terrified to put them things on now!

Can you believe that last summer I actually bought one of the Skimboard Surfer things -- with the idea that I could do this? My husband was like "You are going to kill yourself." I came to the conclusion that he was right ... it didn't really work right anyway because apparently you have to have a perfectly flat grassy area.

Sometimes I forget just how old (and breakable) I am.

And I was the lunch time comedienne too!! We would have had fun together.

Thanks so much for the nice wishes on the camera adventure!

Ooooh I have such fabulous memories of an entire month one summer rollerskating every day with my best friend at a rink!! Fun music, fun times and lots of boys! =P

I loved the five things you listed! It's so true about kids these days, especially my kid, he always saying he's bored and when I was his age, you just went with the flow & I don't think I ever used the word!

I also long for the days when I didn't have to worry about calories. Can you believe I was sooo skinny (5'7 weighing 90lbs) that I worked really hard to gain weight and I wore two pairs of pants to "fatten" up my thighs. Yes, those were the good ol' days!

This is such a great list!!

And I'm there with you on all but one: I've never been an entertainer. But to rollerskate all day? Baby, I'm there.

Your Friday High Five

Simple pleasures enjoyed with friends (3 of 5).
Simple self-indulgences (2 of 5).
A well balanced youth.
A well fed spirit, soul, and body.
Transformed in adulthood...
some more than others.

Don

PS: Nice, fun, insightful post. ;-)

I'm definitely not great at rollerblading either. I always think I'm going to make use of the ones I bought several years ago every summer but when I'm actually out there, I don't really enjoy it that much.

I miss hanging out the way I used to as a teenager too. We used to have so much good clean fun - just listening to a tape and being outside.

I love that you used to be the comedienne of your lunch table. I'm sort of like that with my girlfriends too. I love laughing!
