Mom vs. Poet, Guess who wins?

Here we are at the last day of National Poetry Month. I feel good that I took the time to write several poems over these past few weeks. In this poem, I explore how the poet within me must defer to the mother within me. Being a mother is everything to me. The poet must wait in line after all my mama duties. That is the way it should be. Sometimes I fear that I will lose the poetic part of me because my daily responsibilities take up so much of my time, energy and spirit.

I'm glad that I let the poet out to "play" every once in a while!

Mama Always; Poet Visits

Feel blood race through systems.

Warehouse tools of self-construction.

Nurturing urge roars over ego whisper.

Spirit divided like Sunday pie.

Grab another rung of task ladder.

Child pushes child for position.

Eyes tear with exasperated sighs.

Maternal demand snuffs creative fire.

Mind challenges self to stand apart.

Roles cement over nightingale within.

Flames of first personhood flicker.

Forever mother stretches for next shift.

This is such a valid concern for moms I think. Sometimes it's hard for me to remember who I was before Deaglan came along. I really don't think the poet Kelly is going anywhere. In fact it seems like motherhood has provided some real meat to your poetry. That could be your niche market!

Another beautiful and creative poem. I'm glad you let your poet out this month too and look forward to reading more!

Have you read Adrienne Rich's essay "When We Dead Awaken"? It's worth looking up, if you haven't. She expresses some of the same concerns as you do here.

Your concerns are very real, but you are managing to let your creative side out, which is good. Try not to let everyday life stifle that. Love the poem, it says what you want to express.

I like this. Free form, as we all should be. (: It's amazing you managed to write so many in honor of poetry month.. I'm afraid I can't make the same claim. Alas. Momhood.

This is truly exquisite! Honest yet not without hope. Creative moms struggle because their personal goals and dreams rest so closely to their authenticity that it is hard to find a balance. However, this poem demonstrates that you are capable of both. Well done.

Kelly, this is lovely!

You really do have a talent for putting emotions into words - especially when writing as a mother.

Thanks for sharing and participating in National Poetry Month!

That's so true -- well, I mean, I'm not a mom or anything, but once you get older, you have more and more responsibilities, and our creativity seems to get stifled, so it's hard to balance.

I like to think that instead of losing the poetic part of you to your daily mothering responsibilities, it is just those responsibilities and commitments and love that are filling your soul with life and all it means and so will eventually, when you are ready, feed your poetry.

I know how you feel about losing the non-mom parts of you sometimes. It's a struggle, but you're handling it beautifully in my opinion. I love this poem, so perfectly describing the struggle.

Wonderful poem Septembermom. I love the lines "Spirit divided like Sunday pie" and "Flames of first personhood flicker."
I think this is my favorite piece I've read so far. You can be both poet and mom although you put your family first which is admirable. You flow with creativity so it will always be there when you're ready : )

Oh that's lovely. :) "Eyes tear with exasperated sighs." I truly felt that line as I read it.

On a side note...I wanted to thank you for being such a support. Your encouraging words have meant so much to me and your comments on my blog have motivated me more than you could know. So thank you. :)

VERY good poem! Particularly the line of "nurturing urge roars over ego's whisper". Vivid and apt! This poem *really* spoke to me where I am in my life right now.

Very nice poem! I know we are mothers first above all else, but you have a gift of writing that should be nurtured too. Even a little bit every day, find some quiet time to write. This is your passion, we have to make the time for these type of things. Especially if it an important part of who we are.

If you don't feed your fire within, you won't be the best woman you can be ... and you owe that to your kids too!
