Monday Memory Madness

Dani’s Daily Drop
It's time for Monday Memory Madness over at Dani's wonderful blog, Dani's Daily Drop. Dani invites us to share one of our memories. This week she asks for a memory of a place that is now so different. The main places of my life haven't really changed much. My childhood home, schools and neighborhood look mostly the same as I remember. So I needed to dig deep to come up with this memory from my teen years.

I was born with wavy, curly hair. Since I was little, I brushed my curls out for some reason. I never really gave my curls a chance to bounce around my face. So I don't remember ever thinking of my hair as "curly" when I was young. When I was about sixteen, one of my girlfriends thought it would be a good idea for me to go through a whole 3 hour perm at our local salon. Having curly hair amnesia, I decided that I would go along with the idea and put myself through that sometimes grueling, time consuming, stinky process. After it was all done, I liked my corkscrew curls. I celebrated my curly hairdo. Silly teen me thought that I needed to keep getting perms every 6 months or so. Gratefully, the light bulb went on in my head around 18 and I realized that I could just wash my hair and scrunch it up for virtually the same effect. When I would pass the beauty salon during my college days, I would laugh to myself about how naive I was. Now when I pass by, I think it's a Dunkin' Donuts.

Perm days are over; donut days last forever :)
