Please Say It Isn't So

Many of us bloggers are searching earnestly for an awakening of self. We're hoping to have that "ah ha" moment which will lead to greater self-appreciation and discovery.

Well, I didn't feel too warm and fuzzy about my "ah ha" moment this morning.

We have two bathrooms. Upstairs houses the main bathroom. The kids and I mainly use that one. My husband has designated the downstairs bathroom as his domain. Fine with me. Whatever keeps him happy in his Daddy sanctuary. I will venture down to that bathroom to clean it. I'm usually moving around super quick just to get the job done.

Today, I slowed down my pace in order to look in that bathroom's mirror. "No way!" I said aloud as I saw what was staring back at me. I'm sure little Jillian thought I was talking to the mirror. She's into Snow White these days.

I couldn't believe how much crazy gray hair was standing at attention on my head. This is not the head of hair that I see every morning in my other bathroom mirror. That was an awakening like a slap in the face! I guess it's time for me to give in and go the hair color route.

Am I walking around town thinking that my gray is under control? Clearly, I didn't realize how gray I really am. So no more procrastination. A new and improved Kelly is on her way. Everyone please cross your fingers for me. Why do I think I'll turn my hair green? It would be perfect timing for St. Patrick's Day!

Do you have trust issues with your mirrors too? LOL.

I'm much happier when I don't look. Get in, get out. It's my neck that freaks me out! What the hell happened???

Oh gosh, yes. Department store mirrors in the dressing rooms are the WORST. I have this theory that after years of practice, you learn to stand in front of a familiar mirror in juuuust the right way to maximize your potential ;) Then you get surprised by an odd angle in an unfamiliar mirror and booya! the truth hurts.

So funny you should mention this. I was just talking to a colleague today about the mirror at our mutual hairdresser's salon. I swear, EVERY TIME I go there and get changed into the smock, my reflection in the mirror looks like I've gained 10 pounds. My mirror at home shows an extra 10 pounds, it's true...the salon mirror shows an EXTRA 10. *sigh*

Those gray hairs really do creep up, don't they? I'm looking forward to see what your hair looks like after the make over.

And so far, I don't have any trust issues with my mirror but it has happened before with other mirrors.

I have similar issues!

If I look at myself in my son's bathroom I see all kinds of things I was blissfully unaware of in my bathroom.

I think I'll just keep the lights dimmed and live in denial.

Totally! And my mirror in the upstairs bathroom lies to me constantly and I can't figure out why nobody tells me "your make-up is streaky, or you have lines, or what have you." I am convinced its the lighting though... and yes the mirror under the lighting.

You will love blending the gray away! Its very freeing... trust me... every 6 weeks its the best lift I get :)

My mirror scares the crap out of me! I have so much gray it's crazy...I am too young to be this gray...thank god for Loreal!

Guess you will have to check out your hair in that mirror more often...lol. Good luck with the coloring

Oh those darn mirrors! But it could be fun, too. Maybe try a new color, or go for highlights to change things up. Have a little fun with it!

Oh, Kelly, I'm right there with you. I have many issues with my mirror, my hair being the least of them. I never really wanted to color my hair, I had every intention of going gray gracefully, and honestly I don't think it would bother me now that I have more, but the in between stage was just yucky and now that I've started I feel like I'm stuck. Who wants to grow out the gray? Oh well.... My 21 year old has had gray hair since she was 16, a DNA gift from my mother, poor thing.

Kelly, my mirror is not too kind to me, you see I have put on weight around the middle, weight I'd lost a few years ago. I too see the grey hair but swiftly go to the hairdressers,
Then there is the dark circles beneath my eyes so out come the concealer, So the answer to your question......I by pass the mirror whenever possible..lol.

My mirror abandoned me years ago. I feel certain your new "color" will suit you, but there aint nothing wrong with gray.. lol

I'm like Gerri, I never thought I would want to color my hair to cover gray (of course I went blonde in adolescence and put some punch in my red in middle age), but now that the gray has started to appear it is so very gray -- as in dull and lifeless (why can't I have my mothers pretty white hair?). So I think that I will color it afterall.

I remember that feeling.. I was always going to grow old gracefully untill thr grey showed through.. I then went down the clour route pronto. It is good for the moral.. lol Go back to your own mirror I am sure it tells more truth.. LOve Carol x

Oh, that must have been so shocking. I have the opposite. My mirror makes me look thinner but also clearly highlights my aging eyes. I will deal with the eyes if I can look slimmer. I just try to avoid the other ones in the house.

Thanks for visiting Angie. She is amazing. We were really honest with Noah. I can detail you the whole shabang. Email me: geepeace@yahoo.com

Just try looking at a photo taken in the bright sun as compared to your mirror with wet hair after a shower. Nothing like a scary world of difference.

I like subtle lighting. I always look better in it..... :O)

yes indeed which is why I never use them. LOL We are not on speaking terms me and my mirror. coloring your hair is easy. I do it every month:)

Mirrors, cameras, videos --- these things are a triple threat!!! I too have gone extensively gray lately.... must be the little girls making us go crazy.

Good luck with your hair color. May the luck of the Irish green be NOT with you on that day. :)

I really think it's a matter of lighting in the bathrooms. Well, the mirrors in the fitting rooms always flatter the figure. I'm sure you'll look fabulous no matter what you do. : )

Kelly.. you know , I wash my face only once and that's when I wake up.. and then i dont look in the mirror.. reason being, i think i am either looking too nice [when ppl say that yea.. or i'm looking too tired with either dark circles around my eyes or weary skin which my mom i dont know how sees on me.. so i prefer staying away from mirror and let others see me..

:D

I'm used to seeing gray in the mirror. My hair went prematurely gray in my 20s. YIKES! I've been coloring it for so long, I've forgotten what my real color is! I'm sure your new do will look fabulous.

Millennium Housewife said...

But you were happy with who you were until you saw this mirror! Blame the mirror not your grey! Recapture the way you saw yourself before you saw the new mirror and your job's done. It's all in the confidence girl.

Kelly, hilarious. The mirrors we women have must hide all our imperfections. The other day I found a *gasp* WRINKLE. YIKES! DOUBLE YIKES!

And I didn't find this little terror in my bathroom mirror. It's windowless. The way I love it. =)

Thanks for showing me I'm not the only one. Oh and the gray hair? Been there, done that. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Sagging body parts could only be next.

Oh, and Kelly, thanks for your wonderful comment on my blog today. And for the warm hugs. I am so thankful to know you. I loves ya. *hugs right back*

No comment on the gray hair (mine serve me well in my work). Just stopped in to say "hi."

OH I'm with you ... I have them ALL OVER. I just dyed mine (as part of recovering from the whole haircut fiasco) and now I have a deep rich brown. Take that grays!

Everytime I wake up in the morning and see my curly hair sticking out and looking like I just gone through an electric shock- yes, I have trust issues with my mirror.

I think it is just tricky lighting. I'm sure of it.

About five years ago I was startled because my dad started showing up in my mirror. I've gotten used to it now. Genetics: for better or worse. "Distinguished" is more acceptable on a man... have fun with the coloring!

Betty Manousos said...

Well, Kelly hilarious! that is mostly everyone's issue. Get your hair painted.
I did. My hair is too curly, you wouldn't want to know how I look when I get up in the morning! Ugh!
Have a great week-end!

Aw, what a lovely thoughtful mirror you have. BAd bad daddy mirror.

I'm embracing the grey. :)

I am just the opposite with my mirrors Kelly. My husband recently changed the bulbs by our mirror to those energy saving kind-I have to blink twice just to see myself (bright doesn't quite describe it)and then I see everything! I think I would much prefer not to see the changes taking place-you don't worry about what you don't know, right?

(Good luck with the color...)

I have yet to see gray hair, but I keep looking at my face more closely these days, and notice the wrinkles starting to creep in, my pores are bigger, when before I didn't even think I had any, and pimples, at my age.

I've tried putting on more makeup, but I'm not big on makeup - it feels and looks so obvious. I think I'll just embrace it and do what I can without going to extremes.

I've colored my hair for as long as I can remember, so I say go for it Kelly.

Beth Kephart said...

oh, I have been there. but don't doubt your own beauty, inside or out.

Yeah... I have a post on this coming, actually. My mom looked at me the other day at 6:20am (and I am NOT a morning person) and said "wow, you're really getting grey!" That is SO not how I wanted to start my day. *sigh*

Janna Leadbetter said...

Well, though I'm just getting to this post, I SO identify. ;)

I think we (women) can criticize ourselves too much. But I guess it's not the mirrors' fault.
