Sunday Citar

Jules Bastien-Lepage's painting of St. Joan of Arc

"Power is something of which I am convinced there is no innocence this side of the womb."
Nadine Gordimer

"With a library you are free, not confined by temporary political climates. It is the most democratic of institutions because no one - but no one at all - can tell you what to read and when and how."
Doris Lessing

"No man is good enough to govern any woman without her consent."
Susan B. Anthony

"Good words will not give me back my children."
Chief Joseph

"Many women have more power than they recognize, and they're very hesitant to use it, for they fear they won't be loved."
Patricia Schroeder

I love searching for thought-provoking quotes for Sunday Citar with Fresh Mommy. Sunday Citar also gives me an opportunity to share some of my favorite paintings. It's a wonderful way to begin my Sunday! Hope everyone has a beautiful day :)

I really like the picture...and your quotes. I absolutely agree with Doris Lessing!
The quote by Patricia Schroeder is so true in so many women's lives, until they realize you're never really loved until that other person knows the "real" you, power and all.
I have a quote out of a book I recently finished that is somewhat similar to this, but has been bugging my mind for a week now. I'm going to post about it tomorrow. I'd like to know what you think.

That painting is amazing. I looked at it for quite some time and then noticed the ghostly figure of her in the background with her armor. It almost looks like another face to the left of that one, although I couldn't quite make it out. Wow.

The quote by Chief Joseph touched me. He also said, "It does not require many words to speak the truth."

These quotes are all new to me. (Are school teachers -- male and female -- exempt from the Susan B. Anthony quote?)(What about moms and dads?) I. am. a. contrarian! ;-)

Beautiful haunting painting, Kelly! I have not seen it before. Thank you. There is a lot of sadness in the painting in her face and surrounding. There are rich colors amid squalor. The trees and yard are overgrown. I have never seen Joan of Arc so painted or even described in literature. It's also a more mature rendering of the young heroine seen etched in the house. She was only 19 when she was executed. There is much here in this painting.

Relating to power, the painting for me represents another side, perhaps the view of her executioners. This is a domestic view of her many years later if she had lived. But for me here is no power there. There is more resignation, more helplessness. The young heroine is stripped of power by domesticity. It's most relative to the Susan B. Anthony quote.

Love the addition of all of the paintings on the side bar. Her sculptures are amazing too. Elizabeth Catlett and O’Keeffe are among my favorites. Catlett’s sculptures are amazing too. Some years ago a good friend, Daniel Veneciano, curator of an exhibit of Catlett's work at the Studio Museum in Harlem and I got the pleasure of meeting the artist. She's wonderful! I think she has a permanent collection at the Studio Museum. Thank you for all of the paintings; they're so beautiful.

Love the library quote.

Although in recent years it has come under attack, but just the same, it is truly the only place where you can read what you want to read, with no questions asked.
