Sunday Citar - Georgia O'Keeffe

My focus for today's Sunday Citar is Georgia O'Keeffe. The color and drama of her floral paintings have always fascinated me. Joining Fresh Mommy for Sunday Citar, I would like to share these Georgia O'Keeffe quotes about her art.
  • "I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty."

  • "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way... things I had no words for."

  • "So I said to myself, I'll paint what I see, what the flower is to me, but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking the time to look at it. I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers."
Once I checked out a HUGE book on Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings from the library. After trying to lift the book, my 5 year old son said, "Mommy, she must have painted every flower in the world." Sorry to say that the kids didn't look through the book, but they did enjoy trying to lift it to show off their strength!

Happy Sunday!

Aren't her paintings amazing?! Imagine how intense her focus to detail of that one flower must have been to represent it in such a beautiful way!
I hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

What a beautiful painting! I must admit that although I know her name, I don't know much about her paintings. I'm going to have to check out her work.

You picked a beautiful example of her artwork. It's always fun when an artists work is recognizable. It makes me feel smarter when I can look at a picture and say, "Oh, that's a Georgia O'Keeffe!" You must have had a great time with her book.

Just lovely. Boy I love these citar days. I did something different this week, but I'll probably be back on Sunday Citar next week.

And LOL @ your 5 year old's saying. That's so adorable!

Beautiful painting, and I love her thoughts on art! Hm, this painting would've made a great Grand Finale to my FlowerWorks ;)

I wish that I could do the same - paint beautiful things that really can't be described by just words

It's always fascinating to see what artists have to say about their work. Thanks for sharing.

Ah, I LOVE Georgia O'Keefee and spent a few years studying her life and work and that of her husband, Alfred Stieglitz. She was a great artist and independent thinker. Do check out my label of her on my blog, Kelly. Thanks for sharing this.

I love hearing her perspective. I'd never thought about WHY she did what she did. And the picture book? Oh, that image is going to be stuck in my head for awhile. I love it!

I think you are wise to introduce your young children to art work! One thing society loses as it "progresses" is appreciation for good art and music. Have you ever been to Kirti's site? You can link to her site from some of my posts. She signs as 'K' now. Every Friday she does a post on an artist and his/her artwork.

I am quoting one of your good comments on my new post. Please let me know if it is ok with you. Thanks, wb

Such an amazing and inspirational woman!

I love her work. She interprets a blossom like no one else has. The paintings with a southwest flavor are wonderful too. She can turn something that would normally evoke a sense of darkness, like an old animal skull, into something you look at for it's spare beauty. Thanks for a great post!

I love Georgia O'Keeffe! I did a big project with the 3rd grade this past year and she was our inspiration. It was amazing to see what these kids painted! She was a glorious woman and artist!

Those colors are amazing ... I love her stuff too. And then my mom had to go and tell me stuff like the flowers represent the female genitals as well ... and then the paintings started to take on a whole new meaning. Thanks mom!

I didn't really know much about her work. You've piqued my curiosity. The quotes are wonderful...it would be so neat to be an artist. I work so differently than that - words are the only way I seem to be able to express what I feel. I can't imagine how wonderful it would be to create a piece of art to express myself.

I love her first quote. I will tweak it and use it with my husband. "I decided that if I talk really loudly, you will not ignore what I say." lol
