Considering my last post was about music, you would assume that I have an Ipod. You should see the horror on my 12 year old son's face when I pull out my CD's or even worse, my cassette tapes. What would he say if he saw some of my old albums? I remember sitting on my bed looking at album covers as my record player (my son just winced) played one of my favorite albums. Apparently, I'm a music dinosaur around here. Did you see that recent news story about the 13 year old who was trying to figure out how to work a Walkman? I think Yahoo referred to this device from my childhood as "ancient". What would that kid say if he saw those huge 8 tracks that my father used to have in our 1970's station wagon?
So this dinosaur will take the plunge and get an Ipod. I think I'll probably have it in the docking station most of the time. I don't know if I would use the headset too much. I like my music to fill the room.
You ever notice how a bunch of people wearing Ipods are all bouncing along to their own song. Since I enjoy live music, I'm a little saddened to see music becoming such a solitary experience. I understand why it is necessary, but I love being surrounded by a group of people all enjoying the same song. Our excitement and enjoyment for the music becomes contagious and enriches the listening experience even more.
I love that Beatles' song from my last post. My son was laughing at how many times I went back to my blog to listen to it. Music is a good moment to moment Mommy vitamin to help me get through my hectic day! The summer just started, and I am happily exhausted trying to keep my kids happy and busy. The days seem to be getting longer and longer. That can be good or bad depending on the kid excitement/tantrum barometer on a particular day.
The Ipod Shuffle is so small. I'm afraid of losing it. I hope it doesn't wind up in my son's Lego table or in my junk drawer. I'll have to wear it on a chain around my neck :) I better run to those July 4th sales to get an Ipod this weekend. Right now, I'm listening to some crazy cartoon banter, two boys begging me for pizza and my so called quiet dishwasher humming along. I think I'll have to get used to the Ipod headset.

I don't have an ipod either. Like you, I like my music to fill the room. My kids have something called Slot-Music, where they record their cd's on a computer chip, then listen with the earbuds. Best Buy told us this is the next new thing in music, to eventually replace cd's. Albums will be released on chips instead. We've started collecting a few old album covers, to make a wall display, hanging them like a piece of art.
Im a live music fanatic and constantly attending concerts for the very reason you described. A band can be wonderful in a recording, but when you see them live something hypnotic happens (if they're good that is!) I don't have an ipod either or a blue tooth or a cell phone that has internet.... maybe i'm turning into a dinosaur too :-/ Let us know how you like your Ipod!! I'm sure its great to have your favorite tunes readily available.
i love my ipod! it is so nice especially for exercising! you will love it!
Septembermom...
You will never regret an IPOD....also, you can get units now ...inexpensive....that will play your music through speakers. You can also easily hook it up to your stereo and it sounds great. I mentioned earlier that I have over 7000 songs in different playlists...I have taken 14 hour drives on vacation and never had a song repeated!!! I love it!
Also about albums...I have a 23 year old son who is going backwards! He thinks it is the coolest thing to play vinyl records. He has stopped buying CDs and now he goes to "vintage vinyl" and buys albums!
Dan
I have an iPod nano that I got two years ago and LOVE very much. Of course, prices have come down tremendously since then. Mine is full right now, and I'm considering buying a new one with a higher capacity so I can add more music!
Mine gets me through my work day. I keep it at my desk at work and leave it on shuffle. It's like my very own radio station. I also have a wireless transmitter for my car, so I can listen to it on road trips.
Hope you learn to love it as much as I do :)
Oooo I feel so old....... Septembermom, please tell me how you get on with the ipod so I can start feeling young again.
I don't have an ipod either, but my kids and husband have about six between them. The shuffle is a good first one.
I don't have an ipod, but my kids love theirs. I don't like the earpiece, but would like to use it in the car.
Your post gave me memories of discussions that I had with my of the devices that I had or didn't have when I was younger. He was apalled that we didn't get a VCR until I was 12 years old and cracked up when I told him about the Atari games I used to play.
Hope you find a great sale! I miss reading your blog!!!!
I have an iPod BUT it's ummm first generation or maybe second. I'm scared of losing a Shuffle, too. My recommendation would be to get the big iPod that still works with all the docking stations and everything but no need to pay for all the mini stuff and new generation if you don't need it :) AND there's a new device that will transfer your records to mp3 files... I'm seeing a birthday present in your future!
Wow! I think you're going to be so totally addicted. We may never hear from you again!
What colour are you going to get?! I'm still happy with my CD's...for now! Our kids were begging us for mp3 players (cause ALL their friends had them), so we finally caved and bought two. But, no iPods around here - way too expensive to replace if my 5 year old accidentally runs over one with his bike! We got them each a ZEN Stone Plus with built-in external speaker. I searched high and low for that last feature. So far they've worked great!
I just got an IPOD (finally) a little less than a year ago and I love it. I recently figured out how to hook it up in my car so I don't even need CD's anymore. Yay! Enjoy!
Once you get an iPod, Kelly, there's no turning back. It's also difficult to discipline oneself in the iTunes store; I swear, for me it's like being in a candy shop.
Kelly, I do not own an iPod. I have Rhapsody -- $7 a month with access to 2 million songs. I can play them on several computers. Since most of my down time is at my work desk or home desk, it works. I can still visit iTunes etc., but with 2 million songs, lots of song "channels" to chose from, I get by. That said, I'll bet you'll love your iPod. There is a reason there is a bandwagon! (We are soooo blessed to have access to such a rich world of music. In earlier times not even royalty had what we have!) Enjoy!
PS: I like your poetic contribution on Reflections at PP&P today. Stupid mirrors! (When I look into mine these days, I now see my dad! But he has a goatee!)
i say...just do it! take the plunge! you'll love it. i don't have an IPod but i do have a Sansa MP3 player that i use all the time. go for it!
I still don't own an IPOD but want to get one...I think you should go for it..I do still have lots and lots of LP'S, cassettes, and even a few 8 tracks...But don't tell anyone that....
I love my ipod! Sometimes at night when I get into bed, I put my ipod on for 15-20 minutes - it really helps to de-stress and relax me. I also love to take it along and listen to it in the car through my radio.
Hey Septembermom,
Ipods are pretty cool and fun. I have the Nano not the shuffle. The shuffle is awfully tiny so be sure to clip it close to you. Depending on how many songs you want, you may want to get a larger ipod. I think the shuffle only has 250 or so songs. Well, happy listening to you : )
OMG welcome to the world of fun ... you'll be in love!
Up until fairly recently I was still using my CD walkman and several times at the gym a couple of colleagues commented things like - hey Kim is that a frisbee you're holding??? I can't keep up. I have an MP3 player and have to admit it's pretty handy with how many songs it can hold. But I totally agree with you about it being sad that music is becoming such a solitary experience. I was telling Shaune just the other day that on my drive home I saw a couple in the lane beside me where the husband had his ipod on and was listening to some music or whatever while his wife sat silently in the passenger seat. Isn't that crazy???? Happy Fourth of July. And by the way I would love for you to come and visit us sometime. Maybe in a couple of years to celebrate my 40th! We could have a blog buddy get together maybe meet in Toronto or something and just have a great time! We could invite some others - Gerrie, Jenn or anyone else we can think of!
Ummm, apparently you ARE my twin. I have yet to get an iPod, and I love music too. Maybe I'll take the plunge and get one too!
Oh Kelly Enjoy. I love music too. I own a couple of Ipods. My old shuffle I gifted to my son. He loves it. He has a new found love of MJ. :) I have a classic one for myself. I can't tell you how amazing it is to have my music with me wherever I go. It is so comforting. :)
