Fully Alive

A well written lyric can have a powerful punch. If words move you, a line in a song can get a whole train of thinking started. The line that stops me in my tracks is from "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls. Considering I'm a Rolling Stones fan, who would have thought that I would like a band with the name Goo Goo Dolls. It's fun having eclectic taste in music. It makes your listening experience interesting and dynamic. Anyway, the line from "Iris" that makes me think is "Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive".

We are all so caught up in our daily routines. Days come. Days go. We breathe and move, but do we live? What makes me know that I'm truly alive? Alive in spirit. As a mom, I move through my day handling this and that. There are many moments of joy, surprise and laughter. That's the quality of life worth all the stress and work. I always tell my husband that I want to feel connected in a conversation. He, in typical husband fashion, looks at me like "Oh, no she wants to have one of those deep conversations." I think you have to make a conscious effort to connect with people, nature, art and above all, God. Reaching out beyond ourselves must be what living is all about.

Here are more lyrics from the song:

I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

Isn't that what we all want? We just have to take the chance and put ourselves out there. It's like standing on top of a mountain and yelling for all to hear, "I'm alive and ready to live."

That's a really interesting follow up to the previous day's post and (in my mind at least) almost a push at a solution to the loneliness in the crowd feeling.

And thanks for letting me know the name of the song -- I'm one of those people who knows songs and words but never knows artists or titles. I would NEVER have come up with Iris for the name of that song!

I love "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls...what a powerful song! I can relate! I go through my daily schedule and at the end of the day, I ask myself...what did I do today? I tend to go thru the same motions each and every day, many times unthinkingly...(is that a word?!)...and sometimes I wonder if I even realize I'm alive!!

I agree.. living life in full conciousness all the time is difficult, especially with little routine things. This is a good reminder, sometimes (especially in these dismal winter months) blogging is a great for staying connected, I find!

Hi Septembermom,

Lovely sentiments. Discovering what makes us alive is an amazing and wonderful experience and writing provides a unique forum for expressing our feelings and emotions. I enjoyed reading your words. Thanks for visiting my site also.

Take care

I fully agree with CDB. Blogging is a very powerful tool for becoming present and living fully. While searching for the next blog post we look at ourselves and the way we live. And most of the time that is just enough of a push to open up to ourselves, live life in all its glory, and feel gratitude for it all, the good and the bad.

Plus, I love that song.

Happy Sunday evening. Wishing you a week full of feeling alive.

You're absolutely right. There is always a point in our adult lives in which we become obsessed with self-awareness and the emptiness we feel. The key is to reach out and connect with others and with God, as you so eloquently said. When you are joined with the fabric of the universe, you lose that sense of aloneness.
