H is for Heat

104 degrees

40% humidity

90 minutes

Me in some stretchy thing that sort of fits

Sandwiched between two ticket happy moms at our school's fundraiser while eating a brownie, I hear the PTA president announce, "Kelly G. wins seven days of Bikram yoga classes!" I swallowed my last bit of brownie and clumsily climbed out of that school lunch table bench and claimed my prize. I said to myself, "Didn't I put my ticket in the regular yoga bag and not the hot one? That's no sweating to the oldies kind of class. It will feel like yoga in a sauna!"

Since my "lucky" night, I can't tell you how many moms with eyebrows raised said to me, "Are you sure you want to do it? My friend passed out within 10 minutes. That's the tough yoga. Do you think that you'll survive?"

Now I turn to all my wise and supportive blogging buddies. Any bikram yoga battle or success stories that you can share? Any tips for me as I get close to my first class date?

To be honest, I'm kind of excited about the challenge of getting through that 90 minutes of intense heat. I hear that it's all about surviving the first 2 days. Hey, if I pulled off 4 labors, I would hope that I could hold most of the 26 poses (for at least 30 seconds) in those hot tamale conditions. I should do a vlog right after so you could all see what shape I'm in. At least, all that sweating should help open up my pores and bring some color to my cheeks!

I couldn't do it. Intense heat and I do not get along. Wow! 104 degrees! I used to live in New Mexico but now I live in the north pole, well, actually Montana, same difference. Great post for the A-Z Challenge!

Seriously, that is the fighting spirit I love! At least you are willing to give it a try and that is half the battle. And yes, I saw VLOG!! Good for you, I can't wait to hear about it!

I've never heard of it, so I'm of no help to you. It sounds like something I wouldn't be able to tolerate! Good luck!

Good luck! My neighbor does it and loves it. I'm afraid I'm so uncoordinated that I don't know if I could do any kind of yoga. Let us know how it goes.

I agree Kelly, after four labours and then raising four awesome kids, this will be a piece of cake:) You made me laugh with the image of you munching on a brownie, all surprised when they call your name. The few times I've done regular yoga, I've really enjoyed it but never made any sort of commitment to it. I feel like these days I could really use it and the brownie too!

Not a clue about that 'Bikram'. Part of me screams to you that you should not do it, while the others says 'hey-why-not'. Keep us posted, esp. if you pass out or something.

Good luck on the yoga class, be safe, and don't push yourself too much.

Ive recently heard of this! A nurse in the hospital we were recently in had just done it before her shift and said she felt like a brand new person. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Just pace yourself and think of all the toxins you are sweating out. I think it sounds kind of neat!

Well, some things happen for a reason? Perhaps you'll end up liking the class? or you can just think of all the good it will do your body? Or you could be glad you won the prize and not those other moms who were wondering about you wanting the prize?

:)

You are a brave, brave, woman, Kelly. I am more of a 65 degree kind of woman than a 100 degree type. But what the heck--at the very least it will be good blogging material! :)

When I hit menopause I was hot all the time. I was so glad when the hot flashes stopped. But now, even in the summer, I'm always cold! The 100 degree heat sounds perfect to me!

I used to do yoga but not the sort you're taking on. I don't think I would cope in that kind of heat, even though I am cursing my cold hands.

Drink lots of water before each class. You can do it...you are Wonder Woman!

Umm, you won't want to do a vlog afterward. :)
I did it once and didn't feel like I was going to pass out until it was over. Just pay attention to your body. It'll tell you how much you can do.
On the other hand, my son-in-law has been going everyday for over 6 months and is absolutely addicted! He's never felt better in his life!

My Mom was a terrific sportswoman in her younger years. She's still extremely fit and had always pooh pooh my yoga. So I took her to a class. She never came back with me and now confesses that the intensity of those "gentle" exercises stunned her.

My advice is - listen to your body. Try not to push it beyond what it can do. Yoga is all about being; when in an asana concentrate on the breath and letting the energy flow through you, forcing yourself will only harm you. Remember, yoga works on the energetic body as well as the physical body, and that's why it's hard.

So...oooommmmmmm! and have fun!!! :)

I think you'll enjoy at least the first 10 minutes but will be glad you did it a month later:)

You weren't expecting it, were you? I love the description of you swallowing your brownie and clumsily climbing out of that chair. LOL

Thanks for the giggle.

Let me know how it goes. Can't wait for the vlog. YEAH. *wink* *she swallows a cupcake*

Good luck! Can't wait to hear how it goes for you. There's a first for everything, so here's to at least giving it a try. :)
