Sunday Citar: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Photograph by Barbara Read

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s wisdom...

"We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there "is" such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action."

"Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would still go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree."

"There is nothing more majestic than the determined courage of individuals willing to suffer and sacrifice for their freedom and dignity."

"True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice."

"It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly."

Great posting. Thank you for remembering this amazing person today.

I often think how much more impact he would have made had he lived a longer life. Amazing how one person can shape a culture. One person can really make a difference.

These words could not come at a better time! We need a leader like Dr. King to rise above the fray and show us how to be civil.

I love that not only did my 8yo bring home a wise, wonderful poem by King, but that my 5yo recognized his name and said, "I learned about him!"

Even two days late, reading these words resonates within. Some people, such as Dr. King, seem to have more wisdom than their somewhat short life would otherwise indicate. Truly inspiring- thanks for sharing!

Love this, Kelly! It was also he that said, "Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal." That's one of my favorite quotes.

Hope all is well, bff. I love you. (Having some health issues. DANG IT!

"We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly." Most quoteworthy! I also really enjoy the image you provided.

It took me many years to be interested in what happens in our country. Too many women and men have sacrificed their lives so that I would have the opportunity to vote and make a difference. Great post!

I watched the OPrah special on MLK and I felt so glad I did. In Canada we don't celebrate it but I really feel we should - it's like the last quote you shared - our destinies are all interrelated. I'm so happy to know you Kelly and every time I read what you write, I feel more certain that we were destined to be friends!
